Why the main image needs pure white
Amazon requires main images to have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling at least 85% of the frame and no added text, logos or props. Off-white or grey backgrounds can get the listing suppressed. Most other marketplaces recommend the same look for the main image because it reads cleanly in search results.
Secondary images are where lifestyle scenes, infographics and scale shots belong.
Frequently asked questions
What background colour does Amazon require?
+
Amazon requires the main product image to have a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255. The product should fill at least 85% of the image and the image should not include text, logos, watermarks or props that are not part of the product. Secondary images can use lifestyle backgrounds and infographics.
Is the free background remover high resolution?
+
The free version returns a preview-resolution image, which is enough to check the cut-out and use on social media. HD exports large enough for Amazon's zoom feature (at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side) are part of EcomStudio Studio. You can still pad and resize the preview with the free image resizer.
What photos work best for background removal?
+
Photos with good, even lighting, a background that contrasts with the product, and sharp focus on the edges give the cleanest cut-outs. Very fine details such as hair, fur, mesh or transparent glass are harder and may need touching up. Shoot the product slightly larger in frame than you need so it stays sharp after cropping.
