Amazon Backend Keywords Generator

Amazon backend keywords are hidden search terms, limited to 249 bytes, that a seller adds in Seller Central so a listing ranks for queries not in its visible copy.

How to use the Amazon Backend Keywords Generator

  1. Step 1

    Paste your title and bullets

The tool removes words you already use in visible copy, since repeating them adds nothing.

  2. Step 2

    Add candidate keywords

Paste keyword ideas, synonyms, misspellings and other-language terms.

  3. Step 3

    Clean and count

The tool deduplicates, lower-cases, strips punctuation and shows the byte count live.

  4. Step 4

    Copy into Seller Central

Paste the result into the Search Terms field under Keywords for the product.

How the 249-byte limit works

Amazon measures generic keywords (search terms) in bytes, not characters. Standard English letters, numbers and spaces are one byte each, but accented letters and many symbols take two or more bytes. If the field goes over 249 bytes, Amazon may ignore the entire field, not just the excess - which is why a live byte count matters.

Spaces separate terms; commas and punctuation waste bytes. Words already in your title or bullets, your brand name, ASINs, competitor brand names and temporary claims such as 'new' or 'on sale' should be left out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Amazon backend keyword limit?

+

Amazon limits the generic keywords (search terms) field to 249 bytes for most marketplaces, including the US. Bytes and characters are the same for plain English letters and numbers, but accented and special characters can use two or more bytes each. If the field exceeds the limit, Amazon may not index any of it.

Should I repeat title keywords in backend search terms?

+

No. Amazon already indexes the words in your title and bullet points, so repeating them in the backend field wastes bytes without improving ranking. Use the space for synonyms, alternative names, common misspellings, abbreviations and Spanish or other-language terms your buyers use. This tool removes words already present in the copy you paste.

Do I need commas between backend keywords?

+

No. Separate terms with single spaces. Commas, semicolons and other punctuation are not needed for indexing and only use up bytes. Word order and repetition also do not matter: Amazon matches individual words, so 'dog bed large' covers 'large dog bed' without writing the phrase twice.

Can I use competitor brand names in backend keywords?

+

No. Amazon's search-terms policy prohibits other brands' names, ASINs, offensive terms and temporary statements such as 'new' or 'on sale'. Listings that break the policy can lose indexing for the field or face suppression. Stick to descriptive terms, synonyms and the ways real shoppers phrase the product.
